Goroka Siblings
This watercolour painting depicts a group of siblings older brother sister and infant. The children in tribal life often are assigned the care of their younger siblings while the mothers work in the gardens and the men do mens things. Mothers on the other hand often continued breast feeding to the age of 4 or 5 years so the young ones would not be too far away from them. The pigs of course are also important parts of the family group representing wealth and prestige. This scene was based on a village near Goroka in the Highlands of Papua New Guinea.
