This is a mixed media painting in which the central face is an oil painting using a heavy impasto technique and also mounted in relief against a background that includes charcoal on paper and encaustic (wax) giving this background a transluscent mat finish which contrasts with the more glossy varnished oil painting. The eyes when seen in the enlarged image will attract your immediate attention. Click on the Image to see the enlarged version. The original is 12X16 in. Contrary to most peoples impression this is a painting of a girl dressed and painted for a "Sing sing" ceremony. I saw one of the last genuine highland ceremonies that were called Pig Exchange ceremonies. This was in the Baiyer River Region west of Mt Hagen in the Highlands and was in 1964 when I was still a Medical Student. Thousands of dancers walked in for a week or more to the Baiyer River air strip where they danced for 3 days and nights. This was before the days of tourism to the area.
